Penn's Museum

In the early '90s, I was a cater-waiter for events at The University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archeology and Anthropology, better known as the Penn Museum. I had not been there since then, until this past Saturday. It remains the same 'ol dusty old museum I remember. A little off the beaten Philly museum path, this place is a treasure. Remembering Patricia Cockram

In June, English Professor Patricia Cockram died of cancer at the age of 67. I first met Professor Cockram while writing my English honors paper on James Joyce's Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. She pushed me to go well beyond the original scope of my outline. She wanted me to familiarize myself with the seemingly insurmountable Ulysses. She then told me to purchase Richard Ellmann's huge biography of the author and added several critical essays and articles to the list. As the pile of materials grew I thought, "She's gotta be kidding."

The Crossing

Donald Nally conducts The Crossing at Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill. This shot was taken without a mirror inside my camera, which unhinged and then cracked at the location. I got through the experience thanks in large part to the etherial music of David Lang, which Nally conducted as I snapped away. Click below to hear the music:
